New Train

THE NEW VORALPEN-EXPRESS

Changes to the 2019/2020 timetable will coincide with the implementation of a new generation of rolling stock between Lucerne and St. Gallen, further contributing to the successful track record of the Voralpen-Express. Commuters, leisure travellers and tourists will travel in the fully air-conditioned trains. The Traverso features state-of-the-art technology and a modern interior concept. All trains have two catering zones with coffee and snack machines. A unique family compartment can also be found at the rear of the train.

The eleven Traverso trains are being produced by local manufacturer Stadler Rail AG and offer a high level of comfort. The first trains are set to go into operation in June 2019. The Traverso will also be used on two other routes in Switzerland: as a classic North–South connection, alternating between Basel and Zurich and travelling via the Gotthard mountain route to Locarno, and running East to West from Bern to Chur – thus living up to its Italian name “Traverso”, which means to cross. The copper-coloured train will thus traverse the whole of Switzerland.

The new “Traverso” exhibits all the typical characteristics of the other trains in the FLIRT family: levelled boarding, a spacious, clearly laid-out interior, and lightweight aluminium car bodies, which results in significantly lower energy consumption and therefore considerably reduces energy costs. The trains run at an operating speed of 160 kilometres per hour and feature an innovative, lightweight bogie, which can be replaced quickly during maintenance work.

The eight-car trains are copper-coloured. As a semiprecious metal, copper symbolises quality and solidity on the one hand, and is closely linked to the history of human progress on the other. The new trains represent a key advancement for travellers, the SOB and Stadler.

The Traverso trains can seat over 359 passengers, including 68 in first class. Passengers can plug their devices into power outlets fitted next to every seat. The train meets the latest European legislation regarding equal access for disabled persons, and has an information system with between four and seven screens per car.

The high-quality interior is specially designed to cater to the needs of various user groups: commuters will find areas where they can work in peace, while tourists and leisure travellers can enjoy fabulous views from the panoramic windows, stow away their skis and bikes, and reserve seats.  

Familycoach

The family car is the unique gem on the Traverso. Lovingly designed by illustrator Konrad Beck, it is teeming with illustrations of people, animals and objects focusing on the four seasons. It offers ample space for pushchairs and prams and the little ones can spread out their toys all over the large tables.  

Bistrocoach

Two modern Selecta catering zones are available to passengers: a coffee machine offering a wide range of hot drinks, and a drinks and snack machine. Passengers can buy both regional snacks and typical classics. Red and white wine as well as beer complete the offer. Payment can be made in Swiss francs or euros as well as by credit card.
